You don’t want a dental restoration to stand out in your smile. Metal fillings start out silvery gray and darken over the years, creating black spots in your smile. In contrast, we match composite fillings to the rest of your teeth, so they look totally natural.
In addition to their discreet appearance, composite fillings:
For larger cavities, we may recommend a dental crown. To see if you need tooth fillings in Irvine, call Tozzer Dental at 949-857-1270.
Fillings are made out of amalgam, which is a blend of metals, or of composite, a blend of glass and plastic. We typically use composite fillings. Unlike metal fillings, they look natural in your smile. Composite is also more biocompatible than metal, so it’s less likely you’ll experience an allergic reaction. Since there is no mercury in composite fillings, there’s no reason to worry about any health concerns linked to mercury.
In rare cases, amalgam fillings may cause an allergic reaction. This usually occurs in patients with known allergies to metal or those with a family history of allergies. If the seal between your tooth and its filling wears out, bacteria may be able to get inside your tooth and cause a painful infection. Dr. Tozzer checks the condition of your fillings during every exam to help ensure this won’t happen.
Longevity of fillings depends on several factors, including where they are located in your mouth and whether or not you clench or grind your teeth. While most fillings will last at least five years, in some cases they can last for decades. Generally speaking, amalgam (metal) fillings will last longer than composite ones.
